PCB design stages

Process of PCB design is implemented in several stages. During the whole design cycle, we take into account IPC standards, DFT and DFM requirements and analyze device's thermal operating mode.

Initial data collection

To start working on PCB design we require from the customer minimal initial data: electric circuit scheme, the list of elements and requirements specifications.

Creation of component library

We form cells according to JEDEC or IPC norms.

Preliminary configuration

  • Components arrangement according to the requirements
  • Fixation of components with rigid arrangement
  • Suggestion of possibilities/requirements for changing PCB dimensions
  • Discussion of implicit requirements (excess plug connectors, additional test points or test sockets, etc.)

At this stage the customer can be provided with a 3D model for conforming design requirements by dimensions and mounting parameters.

Layout

  • Final placement of elements
  • Optimization of connections
  • Definition of traces parameters and layout rules
  • Decision on the number of layers
  • Trace routing (wiring)

If required, characteristic and differential impedance can be calculated by using special-purpose utilities.

Modeling

  • Analysis of signal integrity (SI)
  • Analysis of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
  • Thermal modeling
  • Analysis of power integrity (PI)

Verification

Additional control performed by technical experts of Promwad minimizes the probability of mistakes.

Acceptance

Execution and transfer of design documentation set in conformity with customer's requirements:

  • The project file in the appropriate design environment
  • Files for PCB manufacture (Gerber 274-X, CAM350)
  • Complete set of the PCB design documentation including mounting drawing, specification and PCB drawing, compliant with IPC standards or client requirements
